Welcome To Winegard Elementary School!

Our goal is to provide a quality education through shared responsibility in a safe and supportive environment for all students to meet the challenges of a global society.

We are “Committed to Excellence”, and we work hard to make this site a primary source for timely information for all users, and a main gateway for improved communication between parents, teachers, students and other members of our community. Our goal and responsibility is to help each student develop an enthusiasm for learning, a respect for self and others, and the skills to become a creative independent thinker and problem solver.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  It is an honor to serve as your principal and instructional leader here at Winegard Elementary.  We hope you are enjoying a safe, restful and fun-filled summer.   The first day of school starts at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, August 12th, 2019, and ends at 3:00 p.m.  Please do not leave students before 8:15 a.m.

Winegard is a Title I school and all students continue to receive free/reduced breakfast and lunch this year.  Your child may bring a sack lunch or healthy snack to eat if they wish.  On the first day of school, students should report directly to the Cafeteria for breakfast.  From there, all students will be directed to their homeroom class on the first day only.

This year, Winegard will continue to partner with the YMCA child care program.  If you register your child for the morning services, they will be welcomed in to the cafeteria as early as 7:00 a.m. before school starts.  After students are dismissed, the YMCA after school program will run from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

We are very excited about the new school year where students will be All Stars every day!  Winegard is a uniform school where students are encouraged to dress for success wearing polo shirts and slacks.  All students who wear the uniform every day the first week will receive a free school spirit shirt.  You will find a list of supplies needed for your back-to-school planning on our school website at and on our FB page at Winegard Elementary School – OCPS.  (Note: We request that “rolling backpacks” not be used by our students.  They can be very dangerous on the stairwells and too large to store in classrooms.)  We appreciate our children being well prepared, beginning on their very first day!

We are looking forward to our annual “Meet the Teacher” event being held on Thursday, August 8th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Students and parents are invited to informally drop by our school anytime from 4:00-6:00 p.m. “Meet the Teacher” will give you and your child
an opportunity to visit the classroom, pick up important school information and have any final questions answered before the start of school on Monday, August 12th.

During our “Meet the Teacher” event, you will also have a chance to review our bus schedules, join PTA and sign up to be an ADDitions school volunteer.  We hope you will consider becoming a member of PTA ($5 membership) or serving as a volunteer so you can be involved in our wonderful school!

A reminder that our student hours are as follows:
8:15am  Gates Open (do not leave students before 8:15 am)
8:15am – 8:45am Breakfast is served 8:40am
First Bell 8:45am  Tardy Bell-Classes Begin
3:00 (2:00 on Wed.) Staggered Dismissal

It is very important to let your child’s teacher know how your child will go home (bus, walker, car rider, etc.).  IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE A CAR RIDER or ESCORTED WALKER, you must have a CURRENT Winegard car tag or escorted walker pick up card.  We will give one per family during “Meet the Teacher”.  This tag must be displayed the first day of school and every day after to pick up your child.  Otherwise, you will need to park, come to the front office and show an ID in order to pick up your child.  Please be sure to attend “Meet the Teacher” to pick up your car tag or walker pick up card in order to avoid long lines.

It is our hope that the first day of school will set the tone for the school-family communication and relationship for the upcoming year.  We want you to know that you are welcomed at our school and look forward to continue to strengthen the positive relationship between you and the school.  If you have any concerns about any aspect of your child’s education, feel free to contact the teacher, school counselor, dean of students, or an admin team member.

Ms. Rebecca McDaid, our assistant principal, and I are looking forward to seeing you at the “Meet the Teacher” event and on the first day of school. We hope that you are as excited about the upcoming school year as we are.  Winegard Patriots are truly All Star students!

Ms. Meigan Rivera, Principal
